Look, I support Razan no matter what, and I too am angry about what happened, but you’ve got to be kidding me. The voices of the “privileged racist orientalist north?” Give me a break – GV may or may not be a lot of things, but having met so many of our authors (all of whom, self included, volunteer their time) over the years, I would call very few of them privileged; I won’t even dignify the rest.

And assuming your thesis is true and you don’t feel that way about Razan, then we just lost a diamond.

(Sorry for jacking your comments section Razan; I just couldn’t let that slide)

i dont want to open a discussion thread on GV without me writing what i have against it.
but let me say this, everyone in GV talks about this “community”.
i dont think there is one, i think there are two communities, authors, and organizers. i felt very close to authors in Budapest, and i think they ARE GV.

nevertheless, my posts are still edited. and without explaining why or even after an agreement. no, this is not a global community, this is a hierarchal community where authority does what it thinks best, regardless of what this “community” thinks.

really ladies, more on GV later. they’re not that important to discuss at the moment.

“you’ve got to be kidding me. The voices of the “privileged racist orientalist north?””
Yeah. Western society is imperialist, racist, and orientalist in its mindset. This does not mean that every single individual living in the “north” is racist, imperialist, or orientalist. But the SOCIETY, by and large, IS. I feel sorry for you if you really believe otherwise.
This imperialist mindset is so evident in the behavior (and words) of those who “volunteer” their time on not-so-Global Voices. There is nothing “impartial” about not speaking out against genocide (yes, that is what it is) and not describing genocidal actions for what they are. It is as simple as that. If GV has censored Razan based on how she described what is transpiring in Gaza, then it is reasonable to say that GV is representative of the racist orientalist mindset.
But not-so-Global Voices is not even worth this kind of attention. As Razan said, it is not at all important to discuss it, at this point. Add to that the fact that, by its actions regarding the terrorist genocidal war on the Palestinian people in Gaza, GV has rendered itself IRRELEVANT. Off to follow and report on the developments in Gaza.

  4. Jillian C. York says:

You’re right Razan; anyway, I have my feelings about GV too, I just think your reasons for being upset have validity, while calling GV racist and orientalist is unproductive and innaccurate. It’s still the authors writing the articles, regardless of what happened.

But yes…Will refrain from further discussion now. More important things.

  5. Jillian C. York says:

No, Shoghig, I don’t disagree with you on this:

“Yeah. Western society is imperialist, racist, and orientalist in its mindset. This does not mean that every single individual living in the “north” is racist, imperialist, or orientalist. But the SOCIETY, by and large, IS. I feel sorry for you if you really believe otherwise.”

I disagree with you that GV volunteers are mostly Western or fall into that category. That’s just not true, and Razan already clarified that.

As for Razan being censored, the actions of one editor do not reflect the entire organization. That’s just absurd. I disagree with what that editor did too, believe me, but I’m not about to shit talk GV because of it.

And you can hardly say GV is ignoring Gaza.

  6. Anas says:

It’s absurd to call GV racist or western or whatever, we have over 160 volunteers from all over the globe, just take a look at the authors list, we have writers on both ends of the fight; and Puh-lease Shoghig, if you’re gonna make judgements about GV the least you can do is go read the Gaza Special Coverage Page, then I’d love to hear what you say about it.

Censoring Razan’s post was a mistake that was acknowledged and is being taken care of and measures are being put so something like this doesn’t happen again.

Saying what I said, I have to add just one thing.. I’m a Syrian.. Lived all my life in Syria.. Would you call me a “racist, imperialist, or orientalist”?

    off to you,

In fact I am willing to hear the whole story, and looking forward to seeing a detailed post about the whole incident in your blog. But let me ask you now, why did you prefer to resign, instead of discussing the whole thing with MENA Editors and see if they can fix what they’ve done?
